We are currently renting a premise in the vicinity of the Theparak 3 district along the
railway track. The area of the piece of land is about 643.6 sq. m. (6,927.7 sq ft.) This
piece of land has a double-storey house and garden and is used as our Harvest Family
Centre (HFC) – the centre of our outreach to the community in the Theparak
community.
Our HFC functions like a home to the children in the community. They often come
here to play after school, during the holidays or when they have problems. We
organize activities for the children on Children’s Day, for the youth on Valentines Day
and other activities on various occasions. We continually look for opportunities to
show the love of God and to be a place that provides encouragement and counsel to
help the children lead normal lives.
Our community outreach efforts include the providing of crisis intervention
assistance to families and households in need. (For instance, we have helped families
affected by alcoholism, teenage pregnancies or abuse.)
In addition, we conduct programs and activities to help families with children who
exhibit high-risk behavior or dysfunctional families in which the children have been
targets of abuse and rape.
We also provide counseling to families that approach us for advice or help, and we
provide education scholarships to neighborhood students who are in need of
financial assistance.
When the opportunities arise, we work together with other government agencies
and organizations for the benefit of the community.
Our regular programs are as follows:
1. Tuition Program
We provide tutoring services to children in the neighborhood twice a week.
Our staff helps students with problems they have in their studies. Many of the
children from these families do not have educational support from the home,
and it is our goal that through this program we will help to lower the number
of children who are left behind in their studies.
2. Feeding Program
We provide lunches for children and youth in the community on Saturdays and
Sundays. Many children in the slum community here do not have care-givers
around during the day to cook or provide meals for the children. As a result,
many children go without meals and have gastric problems. At noon during the
weekends, we provide free lunches to these children.
3. Harvest Saturday Program
After Saturday lunches, we provide heavily subsidized English classes for the
students in the community. Students pay just 30Bt (S$1.30) for a 6-session
English course conducted by our staff. Children from grades 1-6 are given a full
set of books – textbook, workbook and writing book for these classes.
4. Evening Aerobics
Exercise Program
On Mondays through Saturdays we conduct an exercise program in
collaboration with the district government to promote general well-being and
a healthy lifestyle. This program is open to all - young and old - and serves as a
platform to build relationships within the community at large. It also serves as
an alternative form of recreation to gambling and drinking.
